Ankle Instability

Chronic ankle instability develops when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle stretch or weaken — usually after one or more sprains that did not fully heal. Patients often describe an ankle that gives way on uneven ground, recurrent swelling, and a general lack of confidence in the joint.

Treatment begins with strengthening and balance rehabilitation, bracing, and orthotics to support the joint. For instability that does not respond to conservative care, Dr. Stephens offers surgical options to repair or reconstruct the supporting ligaments and restore stability.
